Racing Drivers are Naturals
Sponsorship should be free money from enlightened citizens who understand their duty to the higher humans they call racing drivers.
It turns out that the common citizen doesn’t know their place, so racing drivers who aren’t born loaded must find the money to race themselves! It’s a disgrace I know but lucky for us:
Racing drivers are natural born sellers….
Getting sponsorship is simply selling, and if you want to know how to sell then just buy a good book - there are loads and it all works just fine. That’s the easy bit, really easy.
The hard bit is deploying the uncommon human characteristics required, AND to get over the crippling snobbery that racing drivers have. We just don’t think it should be necessary to sell ourselves, and in fact selling ourselves to the peasantry is bringing our creed into disrepute.
How to get over ourselves and SELL!
Selling requires the exact same attributes as being a great driver. Courage, bravery, optimism, positivity, persistence, speed, aggression, tenacity, wisdom, intelligence, courage, bravery.
Yeah I know I wrote courage and bravery twice. You need them double.
Picking up a phone to call a company, or setting up a meeting with a big scary business owner takes courage. Marketing yourself feels embarrassing and demeaning, it takes courage.
But so does throwing yourself into an overtake from too far back, onto the wet line when you know there is a 50/50 chance that you will crash into a wall hard. BUT you still send it because you are a RACING DRIVER and that’s how you get your kicks.
So why the hell can’t you walk up to that business owner bold as brass and say ‘Hi, I’m a racing driver and I can change your life today, let’s talk.’
It’s just fear stopping you and racing drivers enjoy knocking over fears all day long. Selling is exactly the same and you can enjoy obliterating the fears in selling just like finding the limit on track.
So when you feel yourself pulling back from writing the next tweet, calling the next business owner or introducing yourself for the first time, tell yourself this:
“I’m a racing driver FFS, this is nothing to me compared to what I do on the race track!”
Dealing with potential sponsors and racing require you to be FAST and BRAVE. Being a great seller of yourself is the exact same thing as being a great driver.
Do that and I promise you that they will be falling at your feet.
Summary
Buy a book on selling, a good one.
Watch stuff online about marketing (Gary Vee, Enzo Mucci or whoever floats your boat).
Get anxious and decide to give up because it’s impossible like everyone says.
Ask yourself am I a f*******g racing driver or am I a *******, will I send it or will I follow the pack like a coward?
Decide the obvious - send it and win!
Until next time,
Terence
